There is a quote by Audre Lorde that says “If you don’t define yourself for yourself then you will be crushed into other’s fantasies of you and eaten alive.” This is a perfect mantra to use as guidance in living our life to the fullest. Many people are happy to define you for whatever they think is best for them…not for what is best for you. I challenge you to not let other people label you for their own selfish purposes but be willing to define yourself for yourself. We are the only ones who have the suffer the consequences of our lives when things do not match up to the ideal versions we have for ourselves. Be willing to let people know how you define yourself before they get the chance to do it for you.

Chew on that!

  1. Begin with a broad charitable purpose that motivates yourself or your group of concerned citizens.
  2. Recruit members of the community-at-large who support this broad charitable purpose in order to develop a body of individuals with diverse qualities and resources that can aid you or your group in satisfying this purpose.
  3. Draft a mission statement that further refines your broad charitable purpose while providing your founding body of individuals with some realistic and concrete objectives toward which the body may direct its collective energies.   This mission statement is the first step toward the implementation of a nonprofit organization to achieve the goals of the founding body.
  4. Survey potential funding sources (including local, state, and federal government sources, private foundations and other grant providers) to determine the availability of funds to conduct the mission statement of the new nonprofit organization. Also conduct an analysis of existing organization that would provide similar services.  Use the yellow pages of the phone book, the public library, or contact your local state association for listings of agencies.
  5. Obtain some “startup finances” to enable your new nonprofit organization to obtain some professional services (e.g., legal, accounting, etc.).

  1. To develop your nonprofits’ mission statement, first identify your organization’s “primary focus”.
  2. This focus area is the idea that will separate your organization from the rest of its competitors, and is the reason that clients will come to you and not your competitors.
  3. Next identify the key measures of your success. Make sure you choose the most important measures (and not too many of them!)
  4. Combine your primary focus and success measures into a tangible and measurable goal.
  5. Refine the words until you have a clear and concise statement of your mission, which expresses your ideas, measures and desired results.

Many novice online sellers and online entrepreneurs think that just because you put a website on the internet that people will begin to flock to it and buy whatever you might be offering. Unfortunately, that is not the reality of how online marketing works. The old adage from the movie “Field of Dreams” of build it and they will come does not apply to promoting websites. Whether you have an online business or a nonprofit that promotes social service programs, there is a detailed process that goes into increasing website traffic. Two essential ways to get more traffic to your website are through the following technics.

  1. Proper Keywords: these are the words that will be used to help people identify you on the internet. You can research the right keywords for your website through Google Keyword Tool. This tool will show how many people are searching for your type of business or nonprofit.
  2. Website Optimization: this is means that you build into your website the proper keywords you found through Google Keyword Tool or WordTracker. Just knowing what are good keywords is not enough. You have to put those keywords to use with optimizing your website. This will allow people who want what you have to find you on the web.
